[HOWTO] QuickTip: Amarok broke on upgrade with complaints about MySQLe

As I said in my earlier post I upgraded my Linux Mint Debian Edition +KDE laptop to the testing repositories yesterday and other than the changes in Gimp I just wrote about I also discovered that Amarok was broken and couldn’t no longer find my music collection and subscribed podcast list. If it were just that Amarok didn’t know about my music collection it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I have 42 podcasts I follow and having to track down the links for them all would be a major PITA. Luckily when I got online today I was able to hit DuckDuckGo and get some information on it, as well as a solution.

It turns out it’s a known issue about Amarok 2.5.0-1 and has already been reported to Debian.  Debian bug #673403 amarok: fails to initialize db: Can’t read dir of ‘/etc/mysql/conf.d/ details the issue and there’s already a fix released as Amarok 2.5.0-2 but it’s not in the repos I use. The good news is that all I had to do was run sudo mkdir /etc/mysql/conf.d in a terminal window and the problem was fixed.

Now I’m off to snag the latest podcasts from Marketplace on American Public Media, including their latest ReMarket Podcast and Paddy Hirsch’s latest Whitebord video. If you guys want to get business news explained in a way non business majors can understand Marketplace should be your first stop, and the Whiteboard videos are short tutorials that explain a single financial term in the news so anyone can understand it. Their ReMarket Podcast is an enjoyable look behind the scenes at how they cover the goings on in the financial world, and if you’re looking for a personal finance show that doesn’t care how much money you have I can’t recommend Tess Vigeland’s weekend Marketplace Money show highly enough. She helps us understand how things affect us, answers our questions with some of the pros in the biz, and she even awards someone making great money decisions with the Marketplace Piggy Award every week.
